Tips to keep Curry Leaves fresh for long

Curry leaf also known as Kadi Patta is one of the most common ingredients in Indian kitchens. Over the years, its usage has increased as people have started realizing the health benefits of this nutritious and conveniently available herb.

Curry leaves are loaded with the goodness of antioxidants. They are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals and have antibacterial properties as well. They are known to improve digestion, aid weight loss, improve eyesight and help in diabetes. To enjoy its health benefits, one should consume them regularly. It is available in the market/online in fresh/dry form.

If you have a tree of curry leaves in your garden, nothing can beat it as the fresh aroma turns any dish flavorsome. However, if you do not have a kitchen garden and you want the freshness of these leaves to last longer, here are some simple and handy tips:

    • Remove the leaves from the plant and wash them. Lay them in a strainer to drain out all the water. Dry the leaves under the fan for about 2-3 hours. Ensure that all the moisture goes off. Now pat them dry with a kitchen towel. Line an air-tight container with a paper towel and place the leaves in it. Put an extra paper towel on top and close the lid. Put the box in the refrigerator. It will keep the leaves freshness intact for almost 15-20 days.
    • If you are short on time, simply put the curry leaves with the stem in an air-tight glass container without washing. Place the container in the refrigerator. Wash and use the leaves as and when needed.
    • You can also store them in a zip pouch. Don’t forget to place a tissue along with the leaves. It will absorb the moisture and will help the leaves last longer.
    • If you want to use dry curry leaves, remove the stem, wash the leaves, and put them in the sun for 2-3 days. Once dry, store them in an air-tight container. The color of the leaf will not change.
    • You can also crumble them into a fine powder and use them in curries, or buttermilk to enhance the flavor and enjoy the health benefits.

Some pointers:

    • While using curry leaves from your box,if you find any leaf turning black, remove it immediately.
    • If you see water droplets in the container, wipe them away and change the paper towel.
