How to maintain wooden floors

Wooden flooring is a popular choice amongst home buyers as it gives a pleasing appearance to our home and adds an earthy warm feel. However, one has to remember that they are exposed to all sorts of stains, scratching, and even cracking. If taken proper care, these floors can last for decades, so it is vital to understand how to clean and maintain these floors.

Here are some valuable tips to maintain the wooden flooring and increase its longevity:

    • Use a soft bristle broom or vacuum cleaner with a floor attachment to remove dust, dirt, and debris from the floor surface. This step must be followed regularly to prevent scratches caused by particles being dragged across the floor.
    • For cleaning the floor, use a mild hardwood floor cleaner/cleaning solution along with a mop or microfiber cloth. Dip the mop/microfiber cloth into the cleaning solution and wring out excess water as it can damage the floor
    • Accidental spills should be wiped up immediately with a soft dry cloth to prevent moisture from seeping into the wood and causing damage or warping.
    • Harsh chemicals like bleach and ammonia can damage the finish of your wooden floor. Stick to gentle cleaning solutions specifically designed for hardwood floors.
    • Attach rubber pads to the bottom of furniture legs to prevent scratching or scraping the floor when moved.
    • Avoid using high-heeled shoes on the hardwood floor to minimize the risk of dents/marks.
    • If you have pets at home, keep the nails trimmed to prevent scratching the wood surface.
    • Use rugs and mats at the entryway to reduce the amount of dirt and grit that can be tracked onto the floor.
    • Avoid excessive moisture and direct sunlight as it can cause the wood to warp and fade. Use window coverings to limit direct exposure to sunlight and avoid excessive moisture by blotting up spills.
    • Try using dehumidifiers in case you are experiencing a humid environment.
    • You can get the floor polished every three to five years as it renews and refreshes the finish of the wood and gives it a nice look.

Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for maintenance and cleaning, as different types of wood and finishes may require different care.
