How to get rid of Stinky Feet

Stinky feet are quite a common problem. The primary cause of it is trapped sweat. When the sweat gets trapped in shoes and socks, it creates an unpleasant odor. Bacteria can also cause smelly feet. These bacteria live off the sweat that your feet are constantly producing. The fungus can be another reason for smelly feet. Fungus grows and thrives in warm and moist areas. When the feet sweat inside the shoes and socks, it creates an environment for the fungus to grow.

One can reduce the incidences of smelly feet by wearing the correct type of socks and footwear and practicing foot hygiene. Smelly feet are easily treatable at home. One needs to follow the below pointers:

    • Wash your feet every day. You can wash them as you shower or scrub them in a tub with warm water. Use a pumice stone or scrubber to remove dead skin cells on which the bacteria feed.
    • Always dry your feet thoroughly after washing, including between the toes.
    • Try applying Foot Powder to your feet to soak up any wetness/sweat. An unpleasant odor comes from moisture, so it’s important to keep your feet, shoes, and socks dry. You can also try throwing in some foot powder/baking powder inside your shoe to destroy the odor.
    • If your feet smell regularly, try soaking your feet for about 20 minutes, once a week in warm water, and give it a good scrub. You can add ½ cup of Epsom Salt to the water. If you don’t have it, you can add Apple Cider Vinegar in the ratio of 2:1 to the water. You can also use Baking Soda. All these ingredients help to remove bacteria from the feet. In case you have any open wounds, do not soak your feet.
    • Avoid wearing the same shoes two days in a row as it helps them air out.
    • Choose socks that absorb moisture. Try using sports socks or socks made of natural fiber.
    • Some insoles or shoes, especially sneakers are washable. Wash the insoles of your shoes whenever possible. Ensure to dry them properly before wearing . One can try using “medicated insoles” which have a deodorizing effect on your shoes.
    • Try using a disinfectant spray on your shoes to kill off the bacteria living in them.
    • If your feet are excessively sweaty you can try using antiperspirants on the bottom of your feet.
    • Try to keep your toenails short and clean.

If these pointers don’t help, it is best to visit your doctor to get the proper medication to treat this odor.
