Home remedies for Itchy Eyes and Dark Circles

It’s summer time! With the increasing temperature, irritation in the eyes is a common problem. The redness/irritation in the eyes can occur due to changes in weather, air pollution, dust, sleep deprivation, etc. Though eye drops are easily available for such problems, there are several home remedies that can help.

The home remedies listed below help relieve redness and irritation, while also getting rid of dark circles/wrinkles and puffiness around your eyes. With schools locked down the screen time of kids has increased considerably. These remedies can also help relax the strain on the eyes caused due to increased screen time.

    • The best way to deal with the irritation is to rinse your eyes with clean water several times throughout the day. Splashing water on your eye soothes inflammation and helps you get rid of the irritation.
    • Rosewater is one of the most common remedies. Take rose water and dip some clean cotton balls in it. Refrigerate these soaked cotton balls in a clean container for about an hour. Once cooled, place these on your eyes and relax.
    • If the redness of the eyes is caused due to body heat, this remedy works really well. Take drinking water in an Earthen pot and add ½ tsp of Fennel Seeds (Sauf), a small piece of Rock Sugar (Mishri) to it. Let this rest overnight. The next morning sieve the water and drink it. Repeat this process for 2-3 days. This helps in cooling the body, thus reducing redness. Every time my daughter develops redness in her eyes, this remedy works well for her.
    • Take two slices of Raw Potato and perforate them with a fork to release their juice. Now place these on your eyes and relax for about 10-15 minutes. You can also grate a potato, squeeze its juice, and refrigerate it for 1-2 hours. Later soak cotton balls in it and apply them on your eyes. Potatoes also work well in reducing dark circles as they are natural bleaching agents. They are also useful in reducing pigmentation, wrinkles, and skin brightening.
    • Cooled Green Teabags work amazingly to reduce redness/puffiness/swelling of the eyes. Green tea has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties which help to beat stress. It is also helpful in reducing dark circles.
    • Cucumber is well known for its hydrating effect and hence works well for puffed eyes/irritation/redness/dark circles. Take two slices of cucumber, place them on your eyes, and rest for about 15-20 minutes.
    • If you lack time, a Chilled Spoon also works well. Refrigerate two clean spoons for about 1- 2 hours. Once they are chilled place them on your eyes. The cool temperature helps to soothe the inflammation. But one needs to be cautious while using this remedy for kids.
    • If the irritation is caused due to a foreign object entering your eyes, a Warm Compress works really well. Soak a clean cloth in warm water and squeeze out the excess water. Now place this cloth on your eyes and press gently for 2-3 minutes. This will help soothe the irritation/ soreness.

Precautions:

    • Wash your eyes with clean water after using any remedy.
    • Every time you are using any of these remedies, use a fresh cotton ball/ tea bag/vegetable slice. Never store the used one as it can aggravate your irritation.
    • If the problem persists, kindly consult an eye specialist without any delay.
