Ultimate Garlic Peeling Tricks

Garlic is a part of the regular diet for many people. It is one ingredient that turns the simplest dish flavorsome with its strong aroma and taste. It is used across the world in many cuisines as a seasoning or as a condiment.

For centuries, it’s been known for its health benefits. These benefits range from boosting the immune system, curing a common cold, and many types of body pains, reducing blood pressure, and treating heart disease. It is a nutritional superstar, which is known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant properties.

Garlic cloves are covered with thin papery skin that is removed before cooking. But removing these peels can be cumbersome, especially when you need them in good quantity for making chutney or pickle.

So, here are some of the ways that will help peel garlic quickly without much fuss and help save time. I use the first trick, but you can pick the one that suits you the most.

    • Put the garlic bulb on the gas stove and heat it for a few seconds. After it cools down, put pressure on the bulb using the heel of your palm. This will separate the cloves from the head. After this, it peels very easily. You can also microwave the garlic bulb for about 30 seconds instead of heating it on a stove.
    • Place the garlic bulb in the freezer for about 10 minutes. Then separate the head from the cloves. The peel comes off without much effort.
    • Put the garlic bulb on a chopping board and press it firmly with your palm to separate the head and the cloves. Now using a knife’s flat side press each clove with the heel of your palm. Apply enough pressure to hear the crunch sound. This will loosen up the garlic peel and make it easier to remove the peel. Ensure that the pressure is only to the extent that the skin is loosened. Excessive pressure will squash the garlic and make the entire process cumbersome.
    • Place the garlic cloves in a steel/glass bottle. Place the lid tightly on the bottle. Now shake it vigorously for about 30-40 sec. The peel comes out on its own.

Getting rid of the smell of garlic from your hands:

After peeling the garlic, getting rid of the smell from your hand is never easy. Here are some easy tricks to get rid of this smell:

    • Take raw Cumin Seeds (Jeera) and rub these on your hands. This will help you get rid of the garlic smell quickly. In addition to this, if there is a bad smell in any of your bottles/vessels, Cumin seeds can be your rescuer. Just fill the jar/vessel with some raw cumin seeds and leave it for about 6-8 hours. The smell will go away.
    • Rub boiled potato on your hands. This is one of the easy ways to get rid of any bad smell from your hand. This remedy is also helpful in getting rid of Mehendi stains from your hands.
    • Rubbing your hand on a utensil with a steel surface can also help in getting rid of this smell.
