Some clever ways to store Potatoes

Potato is a highly versatile and popular vegetable. They are staples in many cultures and can help you create a variety of dishes in any form baked, boiled, fried, or roasted. They are very handy as their mild flavor makes them compatible with almost anything you want to cook.

Besides being rich in potassium, they are a great source of carbs and fiber. They are also rich in antioxidants that prevent various diseases.

Like any other vegetable, potatoes are also perishable. However, one can increase the shelf life with proper handling and storage techniques. Just follow these simple steps to prevent them from rotting:

    • Always store potatoes in a cool, dark, and dry environment. Potatoes can last longer if stored at a temperature of 45°F to 50°F. Avoid areas that are hot or receive too much sunlight. High temperatures can accelerate the spoilage process.
    • Never store potatoes near fruits or vegetables that release ethylene gas (bananas, onions, apples, etc.) as this results in faster ripening.
    • Store them in an open container. This allows the air to circulate and keeps the moisture level low. They can be stored in cardboard boxes/mesh bags/paper bags as it allows plenty of air circulation and avoids moisture buildup. Storing potatoes in the correct container/bag offers an ideal environment for extending their shelf life.
    • Avoid storing potatoes in plastic bags as these retain moisture and result in faster rotting.
    • One should never store potatoes in a fridge/freezer as the extra cool temperature can prove harmful by turning the vegetable starch into sugar.
    • While buying potatoes always select fresh and healthy ones. Look for the ones that has no soft spots or blemishes, no signs of molds, and free from cuts/bruises.
    • Regularly inspect them and remove the ones that show signs of spoilage, damage, or sprouting. One rotten or sprouting potato can lead to the rotting of the entire batch.
    • Potatoes have a natural protective coating that acts as a barrier against moisture and bacteria. Avoid washing them before storage as it can introduce moisture and promote rotting.

By following the tips discussed above, one can prolong the shelf life of potatoes and enjoy their freshness for a longer time.
