Simple and Inexpensive ways to clean Silver Articles

Silver articles tend to lose their luster over time due to a chemical reaction between silver and sulfur. One can avoid tarnishing by storing silver articles properly and cleaning them after use. To know more about how to store silver articles click on the link (Tips on storing Silver to prevent Tarnish).

To regain the shine of your silver articles, you can try these simple and inexpensive ways:

    • Take a bowl of hot boiling water and add 4-5 Soapberries (also known as soap nuts/Reetha) to it. Once the soapberries are soft, squeeze their pulp into the water. Now soak your silver jewellery in this solution for 10-15 minutes. Later, rub it softly with an old toothbrush. This is a very effective way to regain the shine of your jewellery. This remedy is equally effective in cleaning gold ornaments.
    • Take a vessel filled with water and put it for boiling. Add 1-2 tbsp of baking soda  and some aluminum foil to it. Immerse the silver article (statue, utensils) in the water and continue boiling it for 5-10 minutes. After removing the item, rub it gently with a soft brush. Wash it with clean water and pat dry. You will find your silver article shinning again.
    • If you do not have aluminium foil, add baking soda and 1-2 tsp of dish soap to hot boiling water and follow the process discussed above.
    • For restoring the sheen of jewellery, you can use a solution of hot water, detergent, and about ¼ tsp of Turmeric powder (Haldi). Leave the jewellery dipped in this solution for about 15 minutes and rub it with a soft brush. The jewellery will regain its shine.
    • You can use Colgate Toothpowder as well to clean your silver items. Make a thick paste of this powder and apply it to the silver article with the help of a paintbrush. Leave it for 15-20 minutes. Then rub it using a soft toothbrush.
    • Mix 2 tbsp of atta, 2 tsp salt, 2 tsp detergent powder, and white vinegar to make a thick paste. Apply it to the silver items and leave it for 15 minutes. Later rub it using a soft toothbrush.

Word of Caution:

If the silver article you are cleaning is valuable/antique, do a spot test on an inconspicuous spot before treating the entire item. Similarly, if you have jewellery/article with Meenakari/Enamel work, never immerse it in hot boiling water. Always use mild elements to treat such items.
