How to preserve Green Peas for Long Time

Green Peas are quite a popular vegetable amongst kids and adults. These tiny bead-sized jewels are packed with nutrition and contain a good amount of fiber and antioxidants.

Though nowadays peas are available round the year, the quality found in winters is unmatched. So, why not store this incredibly healthy food for eating throughout the year without using any preservatives. The methods discussed below are pretty simple. Using these you can stock green Peas for use even in the off-season without compromising on the colour or the taste.

    • Peel the peas and remove the bad seeds. Take a pan filled with water and keep it on the stove for heating. When the water is about to boil, add 1/2 tsp of salt and 1 tsp of sugar. Now add green peas and stir once. Keep the flame medium-high. After a few minutes, the peas start to come up. Once they come up, remove them from the pan and collect them in a sieve. Later spread the peas on a cloth for about 5-8 minutes. Now put the peas in a ziplock pouch and place these bags in the freezer. You can use them as and when needed. The green peas will retain the color and taste for almost a year.
    • If you are short of time, the quickest way is to peel the green peas, put them in a ziplock bag/airtight container, and put them in the freezer. Do not wash peas after peeling.

Word of Advice:

    • Try storing peas in a small pouch instead of putting them all in one big container/ziplock bag. There are two advantages to it. One you can manage the space in a better way. Secondly, wherever you take out the bag for use, you don’t end up thawing the entire quantity that you have stored. Simply remove one bag, wash it under running water and use it.
    • Always ensure that you have an uninterrupted power supply. In case there is a power failure, remove the packets and store them in your friend’s/neighbors refrigerator.
