Home remedies to prevent Semolina/Suji from insects
Semolina, also known as Suji or Rava is a popular kitchen ingredient in Indian households. It is used in creating a variety of dishes including upma, halwa, and uttapam. Semolina is a coarse flour made from hard durum wheat that is pale yellow.
Suji is easily available in most grocery stores and is sold in clear plastic bags. Once you open the bag, it doesn’t last long as it is easily invaded by insects.
However, by using these simple home remedies, you can prevent it from getting spoilt:
-
- Always store suji in a clean, dry, and air-tight container. Ensure to seal the container tightly to prevent any moisture from entering. You can add 8-10 cardamom to the container. This will help Suji last longer.
- Store the container in a dark and cool place, away from sunlight and heat. Exposure to heat and light can accelerate the spoilage process.
- Adding a bay leaf can help keep insects away from suji. Bay leaves exude a bitter smell that acts as a natural insect repellent.
- Dry roasting suji for 3-4 minutes on a medium flame in a non-stick pan can help keep insects at bay. You can also dry roast it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. This not only keeps insects away but also helps reduce cooking time when you are making any semolina dish.
- If you procure large quantity of suji, you can consider dividing it into small portions and placing them in the fridge/freezer. This can extend its shelf life for several months.
- Using a food-grade desiccant can help absorb moisture and prevent it from getting lumpy.
- Adding dried mint (Pudina) leaves to the container also prevents suji spoilage.
Periodically check the semolina container for signs of molds, insects, or any off smell. If you notice any of these signs, discard it immediately.
Remember, while these remedies can help extend the shelf life, it is advisable to procure it in small quantities for optimal taste and quality.
